Art and Design

Why is Art and Design so Important?

At Meath Green Infant School, we are passionate about delivering the Art and Design curriculum to all children. We believe it is essential for children’s development as it encourages creativity, self-expression and imagination, helping children develop confidence in their ideas and abilities. Art and Design enhances fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and problem-solving skills.

How do we Teach Art and Design?

Our Art and Design curriculum provides opportunities for hands-on experiences that encourage children to explore materials and techniques; fostering curiosity, creativity and problem-solving skills. All year groups focus on works of art created by famous artists to inspire their own creations. For example, in Reception, children are introduced to the artist Charles Mcgee and his relief sculptures; in Year One, children learn about Sir Paul Scott and his work, focusing on backgrounds and silhouettes; and in Year Two, children are introduced to a young artist called Iris Grace and her paintings capturing circlism and texture.

Children will develop their confidence in expressing their ideas and will explore and improve their skills in using processes and techniques taught using their own sketchbooks as a resource to refer to. Children will have the opportunity to explore, practise and evaluate, and re-visit their work. They will develop resilience by making and learning from mistakes.  All children will apply these skills and techniques to create their own unique masterpieces at the end of every project.
